Nowadays, there are many projects that are concerned with saving the environment. Unfortunately, only a few of the projects that urge us to “think green” (regardless of whether the project is devoted to fauna or flora) do their job effectively. I believe that today’s inescapable global situation is sufficient proof of what I am trying to outline. In this short article I would like to talk about the environmental project called REDD. It is an acronym for Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation. REDD falls under the United Nations and is supported by the World Bank as well as by numerous governmental and non-governmental organizations. Furthermore, it is supported by organizations from the private sector, which strive to help tropical rainforests and everything that could be measured through biomass.
REDD’s objectives:
- Efficient management of the protection of the above mentioned areas.
- Create jobs that would reduce poverty in the tropical regions. Such an act would reduce the corporations’ chances of exploiting the local population, through which a hectare of the rainforest disappears every three seconds. (one… two… three… a hectare is gone!)
- Mark every hectare of the rainforest with an equivalent of one ton of CO2e, which the given location is capable of absorbing.
I am thinking of how to end this article; maybe by stating that the New Ark (which strives to achieve a status comparable to that of REDD) is an amazing project! Who would devote 6 months to something he or she doesn’t believe in? If I were to describe why I have chosen to dedicate my precious time to such a project, I’d be repeating what has already been said. I’d rather know what you think about this!
